Methodology
How venues are chosen, visited and assessed — and what we do not do.
Two kinds of entry
This guide carries two things: visited reviews and editorial shortlists. A review follows an anonymous visit and carries a visit date. A shortlist is a set of addresses we think are worth knowing but have not yet visited. Both are labelled as such on the page itself — shortlists carry neither scores nor a visit date.
Visits
Visits are anonymous. No advance notice, no invitation, no press table. Every bill is paid in full.
Rankings
Vienna is our own ranking. Eight federal states follow the Falstaff Restaurant & Gasthaus Guide 2026 and its 100-point scale; the source is stated on each of those pages. Where we carry someone else’s assessment we say so, and we do not present it as our own.
Assessment
What arrives on the plate is judged against what the venue is trying to be. A beisl is not measured against a tasting-menu restaurant.
Currency
Every review carries a visit date. Hours and trading status are re-checked quarterly. Permanently closed venues keep their page with a notice — they do not vanish.
Authorship
Work is published editorially, without a personal byline. Responsibility rests with the media owner named in the imprint.
Money
There are no paid placements. Any commercial relationship, should one ever exist, is disclosed on the listing it concerns.
Corrections
Errors are corrected and the modified date is updated — for substantive changes only, never on every build.
